The Swindon Collection of Modern British Art is a dazzling and priceless collection of works from the 20th and 21st centuries housed in a very unassuming gallery next to museum in the Old Town.
The Swindon Outlet centre is a shoppers delight and is housed in Brunel's restored locomotive works. Those not keen on shopping can enjoy the gleaming Hagley hall steam locomotive in the food hall or pay a visit next door to Steam, a museum dedicated to the golden age of the Great western railway (GWR). Sandwiched between the 19th century steam and designer outlets is the brand new National Trust central office, Heelis. Designed by Fielden Clegg Bradley, there are tours around Heelis on Friday lunchtime at 12;30, and the café on the ground floor serves a better class of food, made from local produce, than the outlet food hall.
Fans of walled gardens should visit Lydard Park. The Georgian house and grounds bought by the Swindon Corporation in 1943, once the home of Viscount Bolingbroke, is a great place for summer picnics.
