Salisbury's market square with its café culture is a great place to sit and watch the world outside. Tuesday and Saturday are market days and the third Tuesday in August is when the Charter Fair hits town.
Apparently, Salisbury has the largest number of pubs per head of population. One pub you must visit is the Haunch of Venison and its tiny paneled front bar and mummified hand, the legacy of a game of cards gone wrong.
Between May and June, Salisbury puts on its annual Art Festival. However Salisbury is a centre for the arts and the Salisbury Arts Centre (01722 321744) is housed in the beautiful Grade2 listed St Edmund's Church, a few minutes walk from the city centre. The Playhouse (01722 323333) is rated by the Financial Times as one of the most valuable repertory theatres'. The City Hall in Malthouse Lane (01722 434434) is also an important theatre and concert venue.
No walk around Salisbury would be complete without visiting the Close. At Malmesbury House, a private house in the close, there is a reminder in a wall dial dated 1749 of the days that England 'lost'. The Gregorian Calendar added 11 days to the year. The Salisbury and South Wiltshire Museum (01722 332151) is near to the Regimental Museum of the Royal Gloucestershire, Berkshire and Wiltshire Regiment (01722 419419) with its display of Redcoats in the Wardrobe.
The Polly Tearooms (01722 336037) allow you to watch the chocolatier at work on the premises.
I am a fan of Fisherton Mill (01722 326346) a complex of studios, galleries and workshops. Or as another 'free' alternative you may wish to visit the Wooley &Wallis antique salesroom on Castle Street.
Salisbury racecourse provides a full race card through out the racing season (01722 412710). No visit to Salisbury would be complete without visiting Old sarum (0871 716 1939).
Wilton Shopping Village is a re-development of the Wilton Carpet Factory (01722 741212). Wilton House itself (01722 746714) has an adventure playground and a varied programme of events.
